Starlink Disruptions Slow Russian Advances in Ukraine
Recent Ukrainian counterattacks have demonstrated notable success, likely due to disruptions in Russian access to Starlink internet services. While Russia has been utilizing Starlink terminals – primarily acquired through grey market channels – Ukraine and SpaceX have collaborated to disable these unauthorized connections, impacting Russian military operations.
The Impact of Starlink on the Battlefield
The Institute for the Study of War (ISW) reports that Russian military advances have been hampered by these Starlink disruptions. Prior to the disabling of unauthorized terminals, Russian forces began employing Starlink in the second half of 2023. However, Ukrainian forces regained territory equivalent to nearly all of Russia’s gains in December 2023, and the largest area recaptured in a short period since June 2023 .
The collaboration between Ukraine and SpaceX to disable illegally obtained Starlink terminals began in early February 2026 . Without access to the satellite internet service, Russian advances were limited to February 9th, while Ukrainian forces gained ground on all other days, according to the ISW.
Starlink’s Role in the Russo-Ukrainian War
Starlink, SpaceX’s satellite internet constellation, has been a crucial component of Ukraine’s defense and communication infrastructure since the beginning of Russia’s full-scale invasion in February 2022 . Initially activated at Ukraine’s request, Starlink has been used by civilians, the government, and the military for both humanitarian purposes and military operations .
As of June 2023, the US Department of Defense has covered the expenses for Starlink services in Ukraine through a contract with SpaceX . Poland has been the largest single contributor of Starlink terminals to Ukraine, providing 19,500 out of a total of 47,000 delivered as of December 2023 .
SpaceX has declined to extend Starlink availability to Russian-occupied territories of Ukraine, including Crimea, a decision that was criticized by Ukraine as hindering military operations in those areas . In 2022, Elon Musk reportedly denied a Ukrainian request to activate Starlink coverage over Crimea due to concerns about violating US sanctions .
