Valerii Zaluzhnyi Appointed as Ukraine’s Ambassador to the United Kingdom

Kyiv has appointed Valerii Zaluzhnyi, the former Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as the country’s new ambassador to the United Kingdom. The move comes after Zaluzhnyi was replaced as commander-in-chief by Oleksandr Syrskyi in February 2024.

From Military Leader to Diplomat

Valerii Zaluzhnyi served as the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine from July 27, 2021, until February 8, 2024, leading the country’s defense during the Russo-Ukrainian War. His dismissal in February sparked speculation about a rift with President Volodymyr Zelenskyy, though Zelenskyy stated Zaluzhnyi had expressed a desire to transition to a diplomatic role. BBC News reports that Zaluzhnyi was seen as a potential political rival to Zelenskyy and enjoyed significant popularity among Ukrainian soldiers.

Approval and Transition

The appointment has been approved by the United Kingdom, according to RBC-Ukraine, citing Mykhailo Podolyak, Advisor to the Head of the Office of the President of Ukraine. Procedural processes, including those involving the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, are underway to finalize his transition into the ambassadorial role. Podolyak indicated there is no longer any political opposition to Zaluzhnyi’s appointment.

Previous Diplomatic Roles

Prior to his appointment as ambassador to the UK, Zaluzhnyi was also appointed as the Permanent Representative of Ukraine to the International Maritime Organization, assuming office on March 3, 2025. Wikipedia details his extensive military background, including command of the Operational Command North, Joint Operational Headquarters of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, and various mechanized brigades.

Background

Valerii Fedorovych Zaluzhnyi was born on July 8, 1973, in Novohrad-Volynskyi, Ukrainian SSR (now Zviahel, Ukraine). He is a four-star general and has been awarded the Hero of Ukraine, as well as other honors including the Cross of Military Merit and the Order of Bohdan Khmelnytsky.
