Ukraine’s ‘Flamingo’ Missiles Strike Russian Plant, Zelensky Confirms Success

Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky confirmed Wednesday that a recent strike utilizing domestically produced “Flamingo” long-range cruise missiles successfully targeted a key Russian missile manufacturing plant in Votkinsk, Udmurt Republic. The strike, occurring on February 21, represents a significant advancement in Ukraine’s defense capabilities and its growing domestic arms industry.

Precision Strike on Votkinsk Plant

Speaking at a press conference with Norwegian Prime Minister Jonas Gahr Støre, Zelensky stated that the “Flamingo” missiles hit their target at a range of 1,400 kilometers. “We carried out precise strikes with ‘Flamingo’ missiles at a range of 1,400 kilometers. I believe this is truly a success for our industry,” Zelensky said according to the Kyiv Post.

The Votkinsk Plant manufactures several types of Russian missiles, including the Iskander-M, Topol-M and Oreshnik systems. Satellite imagery confirms significant damage to the facility as reported by the BBC.

‘Flamingo’ Missile Capabilities

The “Flamingo” missile, also known as FP-5, is equipped with a 1,150-kilogram warhead and a range exceeding 3,000 kilometers. Ukraine has been working towards mass production of the missile, with initial testing conducted in August 2023. Zelensky indicated that production could begin by February 2026 as reported by the Kyiv Post.

Ukrainian officials have compared the “Flamingo” to the US-made Tomahawk, citing its potentially lower production cost and extended range. However, the missile requires up to 40 minutes of preparation for launch.

Russian Response and Production Challenges

Russia has not officially confirmed the strike, but Alexander Brechalov, the governor of the Udmurt Republic, acknowledged an attack on an unspecified facility in the region on Saturday, February 22, reporting three injuries according to the Kyiv Post.

Zelensky has noted that Russia has been actively targeting Ukrainian facilities involved in “Flamingo” production, causing delays in restoring the production line. He emphasized the need to increase missile production, contingent on funding and component availability as reported by Pravda.

Strike Success and Interception Rates

Zelensky stated that all launched “Flamingo” missiles reached their target, despite some being intercepted by Russian air defense systems. “But the most important thing is that all the missiles that were launched reached the target,” Zelensky said according to Pravda.

Open-source intelligence groups have published satellite images showing damage to a workshop at the Votkinsk plant, including a significant hole in the roof and evidence of fire as reported by Pravda.
