Russia Intensifies Attacks on Kyiv as Ukraine War Enters Fourth Year

As the fourth anniversary of the full-scale invasion approaches on February 24th, Russia launched a barrage of missiles and drones targeting Kyiv and surrounding areas on Sunday, February 22, 2026, killing at least one person and injuring dozens more. The attacks arrive as Ukraine continues to defend against ongoing Russian aggression and as the conflict enters a critical phase.

Recent Attacks and Damage

A large-scale combined missile and drone attack targeted Ukraine in the early hours of February 22nd, with 50 missiles and 297 long-range kamikaze drones reportedly launched, primarily at Kyiv and its suburbs. Ukrainian Air Force reported downing 33 missiles and 274 drones.

The attacks caused damage and fires in five districts surrounding Kyiv: Obukhiv, Brovary, Boryspil, Bucha, and Fastiv. A building collapsed in Fastiv, resulting in the death of a 49-year-traditional man and injuries to seven others. A total of 17 people were injured across the Kyiv Oblast, including four children.

In Kyiv itself, a woman and a child were injured as a result of the attacks. Damage was reported to residential buildings, and emergency services were deployed to extinguish fires.

Simultaneous attacks targeted energy infrastructure in the Black Sea port of Odesa and central Ukraine.

The War’s Impact on Ukraine

The ongoing conflict has profoundly impacted Ukraine, both in terms of human cost and societal disruption. Approximately four million Ukrainians have left the country since the start of the full-scale invasion, primarily women and children.

Many Ukrainians have experienced displacement and separation from family members. The war has fundamentally altered the lives of those who remain, shaping their values, social relations, and outlook on the future.

Challenges for Ukraine’s Armed Forces

Despite initial volunteer efforts, the Ukrainian Armed Forces have faced challenges in recruiting sufficient personnel. Mobilization efforts continue, with reports of daily raids conducted by the TCC (Territorial Recruitment Centers) to detain potential conscripts.

Looking Ahead

As the war enters its fourth year, the situation remains complex and uncertain. Although Ukraine has demonstrated resilience and received support from the West, Russia continues its aggression. Negotiations for a potential peace agreement are ongoing, but face obstacles.
