Imagine running a restaurant where two “guests” show up on a regular basis, eat your food, leave nothing for the other guests, then refuse to pay and threaten to close your restaurant if you protest.

The United nations is grappling with proposed budget cuts that disproportionately impact its human rights pillar, an area already chronically underfunded. These cuts, amounting to over 15% of the UN’s human rights budget, come at a time when effective multilateral cooperation is more crucial than ever to address global challenges like the climate emergency, the implications of artificial intelligence, and ongoing conflicts worldwide.

A growing number of activists, victims, and survivors of serious human rights violations are turning to the UN for accountability, solidarity, and protection – a demand that has reached unprecedented levels.Reducing funding for UN human rights initiatives carries a significant human cost at the national level.

To illustrate the impact, just one percent of the current budget could fund the work of four independent UN human rights experts for an entire year.

As imperfect as the UN system may be, these drastic cuts represent a setback to peace, progress, and the pursuit of international justice.

States must unequivocally reject proposed cuts to human rights funding. Instead, prioritize increased investment to ensure the sustainability and effectiveness of these vital programs. Don’t allow short-sighted cost-cutting to jeopardize long-term global stability.

Furthermore, safeguard the UN80-Initiative. Launched to improve the UN’s responsiveness and effectiveness, it shouldn’t become simply a vehicle for austerity measures. It needs resources to truly deliver on its promise.
