How Do BRUVs Work?

A BRUV consists of an underwater camera system strategically placed on the seafloor, utilizing bait to entice marine creatures. Researchers can then remotely monitor the footage, observing the behavior and identifying the species that approach the camera. This non-invasive approach allows for the study of marine life without disrupting their natural environment.

The process isn’t always instantaneous. As demonstrated in a recent video shared by the MBA on Instagram, some species, like the spiny starfish, take a considerable amount of time to investigate the bait. The MBA sped up the footage to showcase the starfish’s slow, deliberate approach.

The Spiny Starfish: A Voracious Predator

The spiny starfish, a notable subject captured by BRUVs, is characterized by its large size—growing up to the diameter of a dustbin lid—and its densely covered body of white spines. The Wildlife Trusts describes them as “voracious predators” that feed on bivalve molluscs, crustaceans, and other starfish.

In the BRUV footage, the starfish slowly extends its arms, one by one, around the bait box, eventually enveloping it in a seemingly gentle embrace before feeding.
