Yemeni government forces have withdrawn from Mayyoun Island, also known as Perim, located in the Bab el-Mandeb strait, allowing pro-Iranian Houthi fighters to seize control of the strategic passage connecting Europe to Asia, according to a Yemeni government official.
The development places Houthi forces in operational command of the waterway dividing the strait into two maritime corridors. “Boats carrying armed Houthi fighters arrived on the island of Mayyoun after the withdrawal of government forces,” a Yemeni government official told Agence France-Presse on condition of anonymity, confirming that the group had completed its takeover of the Bab el-Mandeb zone and Mayyoun Island.
Strategic Importance of Bab el-Mandeb
The Bab el-Mandeb strait serves as a vital shipping lane for international maritime commerce. Tankers and commercial vessels originating in Asia transit the strait to enter the Red Sea before reaching the Suez Canal and the Mediterranean Sea, while vessels traveling in the opposite direction head toward the Indian Ocean.
With Iran maintaining a blockade on the Strait of Hormuz, the strategic weight of Bab el-Mandeb has grown substantially for international shipping, particularly for Saudi Arabia, which ranks as the world’s leading crude exporter. In the event of a blockage at Bab el-Mandeb, the only available alternative route requires ships to bypass the African continent entirely via the south and the Cape of Good Hope, a significantly longer and costlier voyage.
Expanding Houthi Territorial Control
The seizure of Mayyoun Island follows a series of territorial gains by Houthi fighters in the region. Military sources reported that the combatants captured Zuqar Island further to the north. Concurrently, Houthi forces have surrounded the islands of Petite and Grande Hanich, situated directly south of Zuqar, where they issued demands for government forces stationed there to surrender.
Despite securing the vital maritime choke point, Houthi representatives have publicly denied any intention to close the strait to international navigation.
Broader Regional Conflict and Disinformation Challenges
The territorial shifts occur against a backdrop of escalating regional hostilities. In related conflict developments, an Houthi attack on Saudi Arabia resulted in at least 73 injuries. Concurrently, international news organizations have confronted mounting challenges regarding digital verification. Analyses conducted by media outlets including Agence France-Presse and Lead Stories have debunked widespread disinformation campaigns on social media platforms, including fabricated visual content generated by artificial intelligence regarding political figures such as Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu.
