U.S. commercial banks generated $901억달러 in net income during the second quarter of 2026, marking a 12.0% increase from the previous quarter, according to data released by the Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC). Despite the profit growth and an eighth quarter of domestic deposit gains, unrealized losses on securities remained elevated above 3000억달러대, highlighting ongoing balance sheet pressures tied to prevailing interest rates.
U.S. Bank Profitability and Lending Growth in Q2 2026
According to the FDIC quarterly banking profile, aggregate net income for the 4,238 insured commercial banks and savings institutions rose by 97억달러 from the first quarter of 2026. Return on assets (ROA) climbed 11 basis points to 1.37%, up from 1.26% in the first quarter, when net income stood at 805억달러.
Total loan balances across the industry expanded by 1.8% from the previous quarter and 6.8% compared to a year earlier. Growth was concentrated in commercial and industrial loans, non-deposit financial institution lending, and loans backing securities purchases. The net interest margin (NIM) edged up 1 basis point to 3.32%, indicating a slight widening in the spread between funding costs and loan yields.
Deposit Flows and FDIC Insurance Fund Reserves
Domestic deposits increased by 1427억달러, or 0.8%, marking eight straight quarters of positive deposit growth. The Deposit Insurance Fund (DIF) balance reached 1611억달러, a 37억달러 increase from the prior quarter. The DIF reserve ratio—measuring the fund balance against insured deposits—rose 5 basis points to 1.48%.

Asset quality metrics improved overall. The FDIC reported declines in both past-due and non-accrual loan rates, as well as net charge-off rates, indicating that balance sheet expansion did not come at the expense of credit standards. Community banks also participated in the earnings growth, posting 87억달러 in net income—an 8.2% quarter-over-quarter increase—while the share of unprofitable community banks dropped from 4.9% to 4.4%.
Persistent Unrealized Losses and Regulatory Outlook
Despite strong operational metrics, unhedged interest rate risk continued to weigh on bank portfolios. FDIC charts place unrealized losses on investment securities at 3267억달러 for the second quarter, ticking up slightly from 3251억달러 in the first quarter.
While unrealized losses remain latent until securities are sold, they continue to constrain capital and liquidity management across the sector. The American Bankers Association (ABA) characterized the industry as strong, pointing to nine consecutive quarters of loan growth and sufficient capital buffers to service consumer and commercial demand. However, regulatory authorities maintain a cautious stance. The FDIC noted that supervisors continue to monitor isolated weaknesses in certain loan portfolios alongside the broad weight of unrealized portfolio losses.
