US and Israel Launch Strikes on Iran, Trump Calls for Regime Change

Washington D.C. – The Middle East is on high alert following a major military operation launched by the United States and Israel against Iran. President Donald Trump announced the strikes Saturday, issuing a stark ultimatum to Iranian forces and a direct appeal to the Iranian people to overthrow their government.

Trump Announces “Major Combat Operations”

President Trump, in a statement, called for the immediate surrender of Iran’s military forces. “Put down your weapons and obtain full immunity, or else face certain death,” Trump stated according to Deutsche Welle. He specifically targeted the Islamic Revolutionary Guard Corps (IRGC) and all levels of Iran’s armed forces and police.

Calls for Regime Change

Beyond the military threat, Trump directly addressed the Iranian population, urging them to seize the opportunity for freedom. “Your hour of freedom is at hand,” he said, promising support for a new government should the Islamic Republic fall. “After our operation is completed, take over your government. It will be yours. This will probably be your only chance for generations to come.”

Coordinated Strikes Target Iranian Infrastructure

The operation commenced with coordinated air and missile strikes targeting military facilities and strategic infrastructure across Iran. Explosions were reported in Tehran, Isfahan, and Shiraz, with witnesses describing plumes of black smoke rising near military installations as reported by DW. Iran’s air defense systems were activated in response to the incoming projectiles.

Reports of Khamenei’s Death

The United States believes reports from Israel regarding the death of Iranian Supreme Leader Ali Khamenei are accurate. “We feel that that is a correct story,” Trump told NBC News, adding that most key decision-makers in Tehran have been “gone” following the joint strikes according to Deutsche Welle.

Iranian Counterattacks and Minimal Damage

Iran responded by launching missiles at Israel and targeting US bases in Gulf countries. But, the US military reported that Iranian counterattacks caused “minimal damage” to its installations, with no American casualties reported as stated by DW.

International Response

Germany, France, and the UK have condemned Iran’s counterattacks in the region.

Ongoing Tensions

As of Saturday, February 28, 2026, the situation in Iran remains highly volatile, with reports of continued explosions and anti-aircraft fire. Tehran has yet to release official statements regarding casualties or the extent of the damage.
