WASHINGTON – The United States has warned Algeria of potential sanctions following its decision to purchase Russia’s Su-57 stealth fighter jet.The North African nation is seeking to modernize its aging air force with the advanced Russian aircraft.
The threat of sanctions was delivered by Robert Palladino, Head of the US State Department’s bureau of Near Eastern Affairs, during a recent Senate Foreign Relations Committee hearing. palladino expressed concern over reports of Algeria acquiring military equipment from Russia.
The US government is considering invoking the Countering America’s Adversaries Through Sanctions Act (CAATSA) to perhaps block the deal. CAATSA authorizes the President to impose sanctions on individuals and entities involved in notable transactions with Russia’s defence and intelligence sectors.
This move comes amid heightened geopolitical tensions and ongoing efforts by the US to discourage countries from strengthening military ties with Russia. The Su-57 is Russia’s most advanced fighter jet, designed to counter fifth-generation aircraft like the US’s F-22 Raptor and F-35 Lightning II.
Russia has previously asserted that the Su-57 is the only stealth fighter capable of defeating the US Patriot Missile System, a claim that has not been independently verified. Algeria’s purchase signifies a deepening of military cooperation between Moscow and algiers.
The potential sanctions could strain US-Algeria relations, which have historically been cooperative in areas such as counterterrorism and energy security. The situation remains fluid as the US assesses the implications of Algeria’s purchase and considers its response.
