CDC Vaccine Panel Meeting Delayed Amid Legal Challenges and Policy Shifts
A meeting of the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention’s (CDC) Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (ACIP), a key panel shaping U.S. Vaccination policy, has been postponed as it faces legal scrutiny and undergoes significant changes under the leadership of Health and Human Services Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr.
ACIP’s Role and Recent Upheaval
The ACIP, established in March 1964, provides advice and guidance on effective control of vaccine-preventable diseases in the U.S. Civilian population. Its recommendations influence vaccine schedules, formulations, and contraindications, and are considered official federal recommendations published by the CDC . The committee’s guidance traditionally impacts health insurance coverage, state vaccination requirements, and physician recommendations.
In June 2025, Secretary Kennedy Jr. Removed all 17 ACIP members and, with one exception, appointed replacements who are either anti-vaccine activists or lack expertise in vaccines . This overhaul has raised concerns among public health experts.
Meeting Postponement and Legal Challenge
The ACIP meeting, originally scheduled for February 25-27, has been delayed until March, though a specific date has not yet been announced . The postponement coincides with a legal challenge from the American Academy of Pediatrics (AAP), which is questioning the committee’s legitimacy in a Boston court.
Shifts in Vaccination Policy
Kennedy’s administration has initiated several changes to federal vaccination policy, including removing broad recommendations for six routine childhood immunizations – including those for COVID-19 and hepatitis B. Efforts are also underway to increase federal backing for state-level vaccine exemptions and reduce financial support for research into mRNA-based vaccines.
Recently, the ACIP’s top advisor indicated the committee is reconsidering all vaccine recommendations . Last year, the panel controversially ended the long-standing recommendation for universal infant hepatitis B vaccination.
Leadership Changes at the CDC
The postponement of the ACIP meeting occurs alongside broader leadership changes at the CDC. Jay Bhattacharya, director of the National Institutes of Health (NIH), has been appointed as acting director of the CDC, replacing Jim O’Neill.
Concerns About Vaccine Safety and the “Maha” Movement
Experts have expressed concerns about vaccine safety following the changes made to the ACIP and the rise of the “Maha” (Make America Healthy Again) movement. Some of Kennedy’s appointed advisors have emphasized the rare risks of vaccine side effects over the well-established benefits of preventing illness, hospitalization, and death.
