US Withdrawal from the World Health Organization
The United States officially withdrew from the World Health Organization (WHO) on Thursday, fulfilling a pledge made by President Trump via executive order on his first day in office. This decision ends US participation in the international body responsible for coordinating global health responses.
Despite the full withdrawal, the Trump management indicated it is indeed exploring limited engagement with WHO’s infectious disease tracking networks, specifically regarding influenza and the annual flu vaccine. The US historically contributed scientists from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) to inform decisions about flu vaccine strains. A WHO meeting to determine next year’s vaccine composition is scheduled for February, and the administration will announce its participation plans shortly.
As of Thursday,all US government funding to the WHO has been terminated,and all federal employees and contractors have been recalled from WHO headquarters in Geneva and its global offices.
