India’s ambition to strengthen its teeth in the sky is now entering a very decisive new chapter. The Indian government has officially given the green light to one of the largest defense deals in the world, namely the disbursement of funds amounting to US$39 billion or the equivalent of IDR 610 trillion. This giant budget is devoted to funding the Multi-Role Fighter Aircraft (MRFA) program to bring in 114 units of the latest generation multi-role fighter jets.

Currently, the Indian Air Force (IAF) is struggling with a shrinking number of fighter squadrons, remaining at only 31 squadrons, far from the ideal number of 42 squadrons needed to secure two increasingly hot border lines. With this agreement, the long discourse regarding the modernization of India’s air power has now officially turned into real steps for execution.
In the global competition involving heavyweight fighter jets, the name Rafale made by French Dassault Aviation has emerged as the single most favored candidate.
India doesn’t seem to want to speculate on a new platform, they chose to deepen their partnership with Dassault because the Rafale is considered the most logical and strategic solution. Considering that the IAF already operates 36 Rafale units previously, the addition of 114 more units will create extraordinary efficiencies in the supply chain, maintenance and pilot training.

However, what makes this US$39 billion deal so special is not just the number of planes. It contains a long-term investment package that includes cutting-edge weapons such as Meteor long-range missiles and SCALP cruise missiles. Further, the project will be executed under the strict mandate of “Make in India” policy. This means that Dassault Aviation is obliged to carry out large-scale technology transfers and build local production lines on Indian soil.
This move will not only strengthen India’s air sovereignty, but is also projected to transform its domestic aerospace industry through the creation of thousands of technical jobs. With synchronized integration between the needs of the Air Force and Navy (which has also chosen the Rafale-M variant), India is now on the fast track to dominating the military power map in the South Asia region.
