Healthcare Success at Milano Cortina 2026: A Legacy for Valtellina

The 2026 Winter Olympics, officially known as Milano Cortina 2026, concluded a few weeks ago, showcasing alpine skiing, ski mountaineering, snowboarding, and freestyle events across venues in Valtellina, specifically Bormio and Livigno. The Games spurred a significant commitment to healthcare, safety, and operational continuity for all participants, and now attention turns to sustaining these advancements for the local population.

Comprehensive Healthcare Network During the Games

A complex network of services and initiatives was activated throughout the region to ensure assistance and safety for athletes, operators, and spectators. Collaboration between the ATS of the Mountain Region, Asst Valtellina and Alto Lario, and local health facilities was central to this effort. The ATS played a key role in prevention through its Department of Prevention and Health Hygiene (Dips).

ATS della Montagna’s Role in Surveillance and Prevention

Four professionals were dedicated to surveillance and intervention activities daily at the Bormio community house. Their responsibilities included monitoring sanitary conditions, inspecting accommodation facilities, and verifying water quality. Prior to the event, ATS della Montagna was also involved in technical and regulatory activities, collaborating with Niguarda hospital for facilities in Livigno and Bormio, and with Asst Valtellina and Alto Lario for Sondalo.

Collaboration and Commitment to Success

Monica Anna Fumagalli, General Director of ATS, emphasized the collaborative spirit and efficiency with which the health aspects of the event were managed. She expressed pride in the contribution to the Olympics’ success and acknowledged the dedication of the Agency’s operators.
