Vast Secures NASA Contract for Sixth Private Astronaut Mission to ISS

California-based aerospace company Vast has been selected by NASA to launch the sixth private astronaut mission to the International Space Station (ISS), marking a significant step in the commercialization of space travel. The mission, targeted for launch no earlier than summer 2027, will send up to four private astronauts to the ISS for a stay of up to 14 days.

Expanding Commercial Opportunities in Low Earth Orbit

This mission underscores NASA’s commitment to fostering a commercial space economy and expanding opportunities for private industry in low Earth orbit. NASA Administrator Jared Isaacman stated that private astronaut missions “create opportunities for modern ideas, companies, and capabilities that further enhance American leadership in low Earth orbit and open doors for what’s next.” NASA

Vast’s Role and Future Plans

While Axiom Space has previously flown four private astronaut missions to the ISS, with a fifth planned for early 2027, this marks Vast’s first time leading such a mission. Space Explored Vast will submit four proposed crew members to NASA and its international partners for review and approval, followed by training with NASA, international partners, and SpaceX.

Vast, founded in 2021 and headquartered in Long Beach, California, is also developing Haven-1, a planned single-module space station intended to operate independently in orbit as a private astronaut destination and microgravity research platform. Space Explored The company launched its experimental Haven Demo satellite last year, becoming “the only operational commercial space station company to fly and operate its own spacecraft.” Space Explored

The Future of ISS and Commercial Space Stations

With the ISS expected to be retired at the end of the decade, NASA is encouraging private companies like Vast to develop independent orbital destinations. Space Explored NASA envisions itself as one of many customers for these future commercial space stations.

Investor Implications

Currently, the publicly traded stocks available for investors interested in the race to replace the ISS are those on the Orbital Reef and Starlab teams. Yahoo News
