UNCW Men’s Basketball Season Ends with NIT Loss to Dayton
WILMINGTON, N.C. – The UNC Wilmington (UNCW) Seahawks men’s basketball season concluded with an 80-61 loss to the Dayton Flyers in the second round of the National Invitation Tournament (NIT) on Saturday, March 21, 2026, at Trask Coliseum.1 Despite being the higher seed, Dayton was unable to host, bringing the matchup to Wilmington.
Seahawks’ Historic NIT Run
This year’s NIT appearance marked a significant milestone for the Seahawks, including their first-ever win in the tournament – a 68-67 victory over Yale in the first round on Tuesday.1
Game Recap
UNCW started strong, building a 10-point lead midway through the first half, led by Patrick Wessler (12 points) and Noah Ross (10 points).1 Though, Dayton responded with a 23-9 run to close the first half, taking a 37-33 lead into intermission. The Flyers maintained control throughout the second half.
Key Performers
De’Shayne Montgomery led Dayton with 20 points, while Bryce Heard and Javon Bennett combined for 19.1 For UNCW, Patrick Wessler finished with 12 points and Noah Ross added 10.
Senior Recognition
In a touching gesture, UNCW head coach Takayo Siddle substituted out the Seahawks’ seniors, including Ross and Nolan Hodge, with seconds remaining in the game, allowing them a final standing ovation from the home crowd.1
Season Achievements
Despite the loss, UNCW enjoyed a successful season, earning a trip to the NCAA Tournament last year and securing their first Coastal Athletic Association championship since 2022 this year.1
