Verdonk’s Challenge on Greenwood Sparks Brawl and Suspension in Ligue 1

Marseille forward Mason Greenwood will miss a crucial Ligue 1 clash against Monaco after receiving a suspension following a heated incident during Marseille’s 2-1 defeat to Lille on Sunday night. The incident, sparked by a strong challenge from Lille defender Calvin Verdonk, led to a mass brawl and multiple yellow cards.

The Incident and Immediate Aftermath

The challenge occurred in the 13th minute of the match. Lille’s Calvin Verdonk brought down Mason Greenwood during a Marseille counterattack. Greenwood reacted angrily, leading to a confrontation with Verdonk and further escalating when Hakon Haraldsson of Lille pushed Greenwood from behind. The referee responded by issuing yellow cards to Verdonk, Greenwood, and Haraldsson.

Greenwood was unable to continue and was substituted in the 19th minute, replaced by Ethan Nwaneri. Marseille coach Habib Beye expressed his frustration with the challenge and the resulting injury to Greenwood, believing it significantly impacted the game’s outcome.

Beye Criticizes Challenge and Refereeing

“Even though you could argue that Verdonk’s foul did not deny him a goal-scoring opportunity, it was still a hard blow because he was injured,” Beye stated after the match, as reported by Foot National. He further criticized the referee’s decision to only issue yellow cards, stating, “Then Haraldsson pushed him from behind. So if the blow is rewarded with a red card, fine… But this kind of violence must be punished similarly.” Beye emphasized that Greenwood’s injury “changed our game.”

Greenwood’s Suspension and League Implications

The yellow card received by Greenwood was his fifth in domestic competitions this season, triggering an automatic suspension. He will therefore be unavailable for Marseille’s upcoming match against Monaco.

The defeat to Lille and Greenwood’s suspension come at a critical time for Marseille, who are currently third in Ligue 1. They now hold only a five-point lead over seventh-placed Rennes, with just seven games remaining in the season, putting their Champions League qualification hopes in jeopardy.

Verdonk’s Performance

Calvin Verdonk played 78 minutes in the match, contributing to Lille’s comeback victory with goals from Thomas Meunier and Olivier Giroud.
