A 96-year-classic Vermont geologist and trail advocate, Arthur Ward Gilbert, died in a head-on collision on Interstate 75 in Collier County, Florida, on Wednesday morning. The crash occurred when a wrong-way driver slammed into his vehicle.

According to the Florida Highway Patrol (FHP), Genise Gardenia Taylor, 24, was driving northbound in the southbound lanes of I-75 at approximately 4:00 a.m. When the crash occurred near the 109-mile marker . Taylor’s vehicle collided head-on with Gilbert’s car, resulting in his death. A second vehicle was also involved in the three-vehicle crash.

Investigation and Charges
Collier County Sheriff’s deputies reported that Taylor appeared impaired at the scene of the crash. She was transported to Physicians Regional Pine Ridge Hospital. Authorities later determined her blood alcohol content (BAC) was 0.213, nearly three times the legal limit . Taylor has been charged with DUI manslaughter and was denied bond .
