Vietnamese Women’s Cycling Gains International Recognition, Elevating National Sports Profile

HÀ NỘI – Vietnamese women’s cycling is experiencing a surge in international recognition, with two major competitions – the Biwase Tour of Vietnam and the Ho Chi Minh City International Women’s Cycling Race – Biwase Cup – recently achieving Level 2.2 status from the International Cycling Federation (UCI).¹ This milestone signifies a major step forward for the sport in Vietnam, promising increased opportunities for Vietnamese athletes and a boost to the nation’s sporting image.

A Historic Milestone for Vietnamese Cycling

The UCI 2.2 designation, first achieved in March 2026, marks the first time Vietnamese cycling events have been officially integrated into the international competition system at this level.¹ This achievement is a testament to the growing professionalism and systematic investment in women’s cycling within the country.

Expanding Competition and International Participation

The two races, held consecutively from March 4th to 14th, comprise a total of 11 stages and cover over 1,300 km.¹ The 2026 season has attracted a record 22 racing teams, including 15 international teams from Spain, Norway, Australia, Kazakhstan, Uzbekistan, China, Chinese Taipei, Singapore, Indonesia, Philippines, Malaysia, and Thailand.¹ These will compete alongside seven domestic teams: Biwase Team, Biwase Gold Ionized Water, Ho Chi Minh City Vinama, Loc Troi Group An Giang, Dong Thap Lottery, 620 Chau Thoi Vinh Long, and Military Region 7.

Benefits of UCI 2.2 Status

While not the highest level within the UCI system, the 2.2 rating is a crucial step for Vietnamese cycling. It allows domestic players to accumulate world ranking points and improve their standings, opening doors to participation in larger international competitions.¹ Previously, limited opportunities for international competition hindered the progress of Vietnamese cyclists.

Raising Standards and Professionalism

Hosting UCI 2.2 events demands stringent standards in professionalism, management, safety, and media coverage. The organizing committee has made significant improvements to meet UCI regulations, encompassing team registration, referees, doping tests, and stadium standards.¹ This has led to a broader professionalization of the entire Vietnamese women’s cycling system.

Promoting Vietnam’s Image

Beyond the sporting achievements, these competitions contribute to promoting Vietnam’s image on the international stage. The race route spans multiple provinces and cities, showcasing the country’s cultural identity and natural beauty through international media coverage.¹

Looking Ahead

Experts anticipate that this achievement will serve as a springboard for further development in Vietnamese women’s cycling, with a long-term goal of reaching even higher levels of competition. This will require sustained support from sponsors, local governments, and a comprehensive development strategy.¹ The inclusion of these events in the UCI system represents a fresh chapter for Vietnamese cycling, built on years of effort and a commitment to excellence.
