Virus Impacts Players at BNP Paribas Open in Indian Wells

Indian Wells, CA – The BNP Paribas Open has been affected by a virus causing illness among several players, impacting their performance and leading to withdrawals. The virus, primarily causing stomach issues, has affected prominent players including Jakub Mensik and Ben Shelton.

Players Affected

Matteo Berrettini and Zizou Bergs initially reported symptoms during the opening rounds of the tournament. Berrettini, the 2021 Wimbledon finalist, was already feeling unwell during his match against Adriano Mannarino, experiencing cramping and difficulty standing after securing the win. Bergs reported similar stomach problems, noting that multiple players were experiencing the same issue.

Jakub Mensik experienced illness during his third-round match against Alejandro Davidovich, requiring treatment and medication. Despite battling through, he ultimately lost the match. Ben Shelton also appeared unwell during the tournament, falling to Learner Tien in the third round.

“Ben didn’t feel 100 percent. He definitely wasn’t at his best all week. But he stepped up, fought and gave it his all. For that, he deserves a huge compliment,” commented Tien after his victory over Shelton.

Daniel Altmaier and Dino Prižmič were forced to withdraw from the tournament due to illness. Altmaier conceded his first-round match against Miomir Kecmanovic, while Prižmič did not finish his second-round duel with Arthur Fils.

Recent Match Results

Jakub Mensik was defeated by Alejandro Davidovich. Ben Shelton lost to Learner Tien in the third round.
