Nutritional Supplement Scams Target Seniors in Germany
A growing number of seniors in Germany are falling victim to a deceptive scam involving unsolicited shipments of nutritional supplements and subsequent aggressive debt collection practices. Reports indicate that individuals are receiving packages of vitamins and supplements they did not order, followed by invoices for alleged subscription contracts and, demands from debt collection agencies.
The Scam Unfolds
The scam typically begins with an individual receiving a package containing nutritional supplements, often from companies like Naturnah or 2N-Naturprodukte GmbH, despite not having placed an order. No invoice or explanation is included with the initial shipment. Shortly after, recipients are presented with invoices for subscription contracts they never agreed to, and amounts are debited from their accounts. When individuals dispute these charges, they are often confronted with debt collection demands.
Aggressive Debt Collection Tactics
The alleged debt is frequently transferred to debt collection agencies, such as Quatripay GmbH and Media Finanz, who employ aggressive tactics to pressure victims into payment. These tactics include repeated reminders and offers of installment plans. Consumer advocates warn against accepting these installment offers, as doing so can be legally interpreted as acknowledging the debt according to the Saxony Consumer Center.
Kamila Kempfert of the Saxony Consumer Center emphasizes that Quatripay GmbH may not have the legal authority to operate as a debt collection agency.
Similar Experiences Across Saxony
An 80-year-old man from the Zittau Mountains reported a similar experience, receiving a phone call offering a “no-obligation” trial of vitamin capsules, only to have money debited from his account under the guise of a subscription. He also received subsequent debt collection demands, totaling 690 euros.
Seeking Help and Legal Recourse
Victims are encouraged to file police reports and seek assistance from consumer advice centers. The Saxony Consumer Center has been requesting proof of subscription agreements on behalf of affected individuals and lodging objections against the debt collection demands. In some cases, debt collection efforts have been halted upon intervention by the consumer center.
Company Responses
2N-Naturprodukte GmbH and Quatripay GmbH have reportedly denied the allegations, claiming that all deliveries are ordered and all contracts are legally sound with proper cancellation instructions as reported by MDR SACHSEN. Yet, consumer advocates maintain that the affected individuals did not place any orders or enter into any subscriptions.
Protecting Yourself
- Be wary of unsolicited offers, especially those requiring financial information.
- Carefully review all invoices and bank statements for unauthorized charges.
- Do not accept installment plans from debt collection agencies without seeking legal advice.
- Report any suspected scams to the police and your local consumer protection agency.
This scam highlights the vulnerability of seniors to deceptive marketing practices and the importance of vigilance in protecting personal and financial information.
