Marcus Newsom Named USTFCCCA Indoor Women’s Head Coach of the Year for the Midwest Region
NEW ORLEANS, Louisiana – Wartburg College’s Director of Cross Country and Track and Field, Marcus Newsom, has been recognized as the USTFCCCA (United States Track & Field and Cross Country Coaches Association) Indoor Women’s Head Coach of the Year for the Midwest region, the national organization announced on March 24, 2026.
Newsom guided the Wartburg Knights to victory at the American Rivers Conference Indoor Championships, securing the team title with a score of 216 points – a 67-point margin over the competition. The Knights as well achieved a 15th-place finish at the NCAA Division III Indoor Championships, earning 11 All-American honors.
A History of Coaching Excellence
This latest honor adds to Newsom’s impressive record. He is now a seven-time USTFCCCA Division III Indoor Women’s Coach of the Year. Throughout his career, Newsom has received a total of 17 USTFCCCA Division III Regional women’s outdoor and indoor Coach of the Year awards.
The USTFCCCA awards are determined by a vote of its member coaches, recognizing outstanding achievements within their respective regions. Eligibility is limited to individuals from USTFCCCA member programs.
Newsom’s Impressive Career at Wartburg
Marcus Newsom began his tenure at Wartburg College in 1995 as an assistant coach before being promoted to head coach in 1998. Since then, he has overseen the development of over 600 All-Americans and led the team to 64 conference titles and 9 national championships.
Under Newsom’s leadership, Wartburg track and field student-athletes have achieved 235 indoor and 302 outdoor Division III All-American performances.
In 2021, Newsom was named the NCAA Division III Men’s Outdoor Track & Field National Coach of the Year after leading the Knights to their first outdoor team title in program history, with a total of 54 points.
