Queen Silvia of Sweden Honored in Düsseldorf for Lifetime of Social Commitment

Düsseldorf, Germany – Queen Silvia of Sweden received the “Düsseldorfer of the Year” award on Monday, March 23, 2026, recognizing her decades of dedication to social causes, particularly her work protecting vulnerable children. The honor was presented by Hendrik Wüst, Minister President of North Rhine-Westphalia, during a gala hosted by the Rheinische Post newspaper.

A Return to Her Former Home

The visit held special significance for Queen Silvia, as she attended secondary school in Düsseldorf, graduating from Luisen-Gymnasium in 1963. She was received by Minister President Wüst at the State Chancellery, where she signed the guest book. Nathanael Liminski, Minister for Federal and European Affairs, International Affairs, and Head of the State Chancellery, also participated in the meeting. This marked the first official visit by the Swedish Queen to the State Chancellery.

Championing Children’s Rights

Minister President Wüst praised Queen Silvia’s tireless efforts on behalf of society’s most vulnerable, stating, “With great empathy, leadership and international appeal, she works tirelessly for the weakest in our society – especially for children who have become victims of violence and abuse.” Reuters reported on the recognition of her commitment.

Queen Silvia is the founder and honorary chair of the World Childhood Foundation, established in 1999. The foundation has implemented over 1,200 projects in 19 countries, providing protection and support to children in need. Yahoo News highlighted the foundation’s significant contribution to improving child welfare globally.

Visiting the Childhood House

During her visit, Queen Silvia also toured the Childhood House at Düsseldorf University Hospital. This facility serves as a crucial resource for children and young people who have experienced sexual abuse or serious physical violence, offering a safe environment for interviews and support. The center allows children to be carefully questioned without encountering their abuser, potentially avoiding the trauma of a court hearing. MSN reported on the Queen’s visit to the facility.

A Golden Wedding Anniversary on the Horizon

The award ceremony took place as Queen Silvia and King Carl Gustaf of Sweden prepare to celebrate their golden wedding anniversary and 50th anniversary on the throne in June. She first met King Carl Gustaf at the 1972 Olympic Games in Munich, where she worked as a hostess.
