Waxahatchee and Brennan Wedl Reimagine Kathleen Edwards’ “Six O’Clock News” with New Anti- Release
Nashville-based singer-songwriter Brennan Wedl has officially signed with ANTI- Records, marking the occasion with a poignant cover of Kathleen Edwards’ 2002 single, “Six O’Clock News.” The release features a collaboration with Waxahatchee, also signed to ANTI-, and brings a fresh perspective to Edwards’ original exploration of gun violence and its impact on American communities.
The collaboration came about organically, as Katie Crutchfield of Waxahatchee explained, “Brennan and I really bonded over our mutual love for Kathleen Edwards’ music. It’s such a powerful song with timeless appeal and I’m just thrilled to get to release our take on it.” The Line of Best Fit reports.
A Song Rooted in Contemporary Concerns
Edwards’ “Six O’Clock News” originally addressed the anxieties surrounding gun violence in America. Wedl reflects on the song’s enduring relevance, stating, “To record and sing this exceptionally contemporary story with Waxahatchee over twenty years later is a direct link to the very heart of why I play music.” Femmusic highlights this connection.
Kathleen Edwards herself has expressed her appreciation for the cover, noting, “I absolutely love this so much and am humbled that my song gets to live a new life with Katie and Brennan. 25 years ago, my audience looked a lot different than theirs does today – it’s incredibly cool to see young women love the songwriting that means so much to me, too.” Our Culture Mag shares Edwards’ enthusiastic response.
Wedl’s Transition and Upcoming Tour
Brennan Wedl’s signing with ANTI- marks a new chapter in her musical journey, following her time with the microtonal jazz quartet Dazey & the Scouts. She is now embarking on a solo career, exploring a sound she describes as “grungetry”—a blend of grunge and country. The Line of Best Fit details this stylistic shift.
Wedl will be joining Waxahatchee and MJ Lenderman on their upcoming co-headlining US tour this April, where she will continue to perform the cover alongside other material. Our Culture Mag confirms her role as the opening act.
“Six O’Clock News” featuring Waxahatchee is available now on ANTI-. Yahoo Entertainment reports.
