Hyundai E&C and Webuild Deepen Partnership for Global Infrastructure Projects
Hyundai Engineering & Construction (Hyundai E&C) and Italy’s Webuild have signed a memorandum of understanding (MoU) to strengthen their strategic collaboration, focusing on large-scale infrastructure and energy projects across key global markets. The partnership targets opportunities in port, airport, defence infrastructure and green energy, with a particular emphasis on North America and the Asia-Pacific region.
Strategic Collaboration Details
The agreement, formalized on March 17, 2026, builds upon an initial strategic partnership signed on March 13, 2026, at Webuild’s headquarters in Rome, Italy . The companies will jointly pursue projects utilizing Public-Private Partnership (PPP), Engineering, Procurement, and Construction (EPC), or Design & Build models.
Webuild’s Expertise and Global Reach
Webuild is a leading global general contractor specializing in complex infrastructure projects, including railways, tunnels, dams, and hydropower facilities, particularly pumped-storage hydropower. The company holds a significant market share in Europe, North America, and Australia and was ranked as the world’s No. 1 contractor in water resources, including dams and reservoirs, by ENR last year .
Focus on Pumped-Storage Hydropower
A key area of collaboration will be pumped-storage hydropower, a technology gaining prominence as a long-duration energy storage solution to address the intermittency of renewable energy sources. Global pumped-storage capacity reached approximately 189 gigawatts in 2024, representing a 5% increase from the previous year . Hyundai E&C aims to leverage Webuild’s expertise in this field to expand its presence in advanced markets.
Geographic Focus
The partnership will target projects across several regions:
- Europe and North America: Focusing on social infrastructure like high-speed rail and airports.
- Asia-Pacific and Middle East: Expanding into these rapidly growing markets with both infrastructure and energy projects.
Hyundai E&C’s Strategic Objectives
Hyundai E&C intends to accelerate its expansion into advanced markets by capitalizing on synergies with Webuild, particularly in large-scale hydropower plants and tunnel/underground space construction . This collaboration is expected to strengthen Hyundai E&C’s global competitiveness in the infrastructure and energy sectors.
Recent Developments
In addition to this partnership, Hyundai E&C has too been selected as the Engineering, Procurement and Construction (EPC) contractor for 300 MW Small Modular Reactors (SMRs) at the Palisades site by Holtec .
