GLP-1s and Thanksgiving: What Hosts Need to Know

Table of Contents

More than 10% of American adults have used GLP-1s,which is triple the rate just five years ago, according to the nonprofit RAND. As doctors prescribe more people drugs like ozempic and Wegovy, the likelihood of having a family member on it increases, and this could impact Thanksgiving dinner.

While most know the drug helps people loose weight, some may not know how it does that or how it affects the body. Straight Arrow News spoke with an expert to see how the drug may affect Thanksgiving habits and what hosts can do to facilitate those on it.

What do GLP-1s do?

Registered dietitian Lisa Moskovitz explains that GLP-1s, or glucagon-like peptide-1 receptor agonists, mimic a natural hormone in the body. This hormone plays a role in appetite regulation and blood sugar control.

“These medications work by slowing down gastric emptying, which means food stays in your stomach longer, making you feel fuller for a longer period of time,” Moskovitz said.”They also stimulate insulin release when blood sugar levels are high and suppress glucagon secretion, which helps to lower blood sugar.”

How might GLP-1s affect Thanksgiving?

Because GLP-1s impact appetite and digestion, Thanksgiving can present unique challenges for those taking them. Here’s what to expect:

  • reduced Appetite: Individuals on GLP-1s may feel full much faster and eat significantly less than usual.
  • Changes in Food Tolerance: High-fat foods, common at Thanksgiving, can cause discomfort like nausea or diarrhea.
  • Altered Taste Preferences: Some users report changes in how food tastes, possibly leading to a disinterest in traditionally favored Thanksgiving dishes.
  • Potential for Nausea: Overindulging, even in smaller portions, can trigger nausea.

What can Thanksgiving hosts do?

Hosts can create a more agreeable Thanksgiving experience for guests on GLP-1s by making a few adjustments:

  • Offer Smaller Portions: Serve smaller portions of each dish to avoid overwhelming anyone.
  • Provide Healthy Options: Include plenty of vegetables, lean proteins, and whole grains.
  • Be Mindful of Fat Content: Offer alternatives to traditionally high-fat dishes. For example, use olive oil instead of butter.
  • Don’t Pressure Guests to Eat: Respect individual choices and avoid pressuring anyone to eat more than they’re comfortable with.
  • Have Ginger Ale or Peppermint Tea Available: These can definitely help soothe nausea.

“The biggest thing is to just be understanding and supportive. Don’t make a big deal out of someone not eating a lot, and don’t push food on them.”

Key takeaways

  • GLP-1s impact appetite, digestion, and potentially taste.
  • Thanksgiving can be challenging for those on GLP-1s due to the abundance of rich foods.
  • Hosts can create a more inclusive experience by offering smaller portions, healthy options, and respecting individual choices.
