Weight-Loss Surgery: More Cost-Effective Than GLP-1 Drugs, Study Finds
A recent analysis suggests weight-loss surgery might be more cost-effective than popular GLP-1 drugs, like Ozempic and Wegovy, offering patients longer healthier lives at a lower price tag.
According to Northwestern University researchers presenting findings at the American College of Surgeons meeting in San Francisco, weight-loss surgery delivers two extra healthy years of life while saving patients approximately $9,000 annually.
Understanding the Cost Analysis
These findings carry significant weight for insurance companies, especially considering the surging demand for GLP-1 medications. The analysis compared different weight management strategies, analyzing their cost-effectiveness across various factors.
Here’s what researchers discovered:
-
Surgery vs. Drugs: While weight-loss surgery has a higher upfront expense (ranging from $17,400 to $22,850), its long-term benefits significantly outweigh the initial investment. GLP-1 drugs, on the other hand, average annual costs between $9,360 and $16,200, extending over a patient’s lifetime.
- Combined Approach: Combining GLP-1 medication with surgery yielded additional savings of roughly $7,200 annually. Patients using this combined approach also enjoyed five more quality-adjusted life years compared to surgery alone.
Insurance Coverage in Flux
“As evidence of health benefits of [GLP-1s] continues to come out, insurance companies will have to decide whether they will cover these medications and in which case scenarios,” states Anne Stey, the study’s senior investigator. “Understanding if and how these different obesity management options are cost-effective is critical to ensure as many people have access to these medications as possible.”
Future Prospects
While weight-loss surgery currently appears the more economical choice, Northwestern researchers emphasize that GLP-1 drug costs could significantly impact their future cost-effectiveness. They estimate a nearly 75% price reduction could shift the balance in favor of medications.
