West Bank Violence: Israeli Settlers Attack Palestinian Villages

Following the death of an 18-year-aged Israeli settler, extremist Jewish settlers have launched a series of attacks on Palestinian villages in the occupied West Bank, resulting in arson, property damage, and injuries. The violence underscores the escalating tensions in the region and raises concerns about the safety and security of Palestinian communities.

Trigger for the Violence

The attacks began after Yehuda Sherman, an 18-year-old Israeli settler, died on Saturday after being hit by a vehicle driven by a Palestinian as reported by the BBC. Israeli police are investigating whether the incident was deliberate or accidental.

Settler Attacks and Damage

In response to Sherman’s death, settlers reportedly used WhatsApp groups to call for a “revenge campaign.” Overnight Saturday and into Sunday, more than 20 settler attacks were reported according to a defense official cited by Israeli media. Settlers set fire to homes, vehicles, and agricultural fields in several Palestinian villages, including Jalud, Qaryut, al-Funduqmiya, and Silat al-Dhah .

The villages of al-Fandaqumiya and Seilat al-Dahr, south of Jenin, were also targeted, with settlers setting homes and cars ablaze and damaging property as reported by Al Jazeera and The Guardian. In Masafer Yatta, south of Hebron, two Palestinians were wounded and three were arrested during a settler incursion .

Footage circulating online, though not independently verified by the BBC, appears to show over 90 individuals, many masked, entering the village of Jalud .

Casualties and Response

At least ten Palestinians were injured in the violence, according to the Palestinian Red Crescent . One Israeli police officer was also injured during a confrontation with settlers near the settlement of Itamar . Five settlers were arrested near the Palestinian village of Deir al-Hatab .

The Israel Defense Forces (IDF) stated that troops and border police units were deployed to several villages after receiving reports of arson and unrest .
