Twelve countries across Europe have reported human cases of West Nile virus, according to a Friday, August 21, 2026, announcement from the European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC). The public health agency is urging member states to bolster continent-wide mosquito surveillance and control measures as transmission seasons intensify.
Geographic Spread and Case Counts Across Europe
According to data published by the ECDC, the 12 nations confirming infections include Albania, Austria, France, Germany, Greece, Italy, Kosovo, the Netherlands, North Macedonia, Romania, Serbia, and Spain. Across these countries, 99 distinct regions have reported virus circulation. Italy and the heaviest-hit regions have recorded the highest case loads, with Italy logging 311 cases and Greece confirming 157 cases.
This transmission footprint marks a significant expansion compared to prior tracking periods. According to the ECDC, only 67 regions across nine European countries had reported cases during the corresponding timeframe in 2025. Additionally, 21 regions identified their very first cases this year. In France, Santé publique France announced an autochthonous case in the Pyrénées-Orientales department, marking the country’s initial locally acquired human detection of the season.
Clinical Characteristics and Neuro-Invasive Risks
West Nile virus is an arbovirus primarily transmitted to humans through the bites of infected mosquitoes. In severe cases, the virus leads to neuro-invasive diseases such as meningitis, encephalitis, and comas.

Crucially, the WHO states that there are currently no approved vaccines or specific antiviral treatments available for human West Nile virus infections, leaving vector control and personal protection as the primary defense mechanisms.
Vector Expansion and Public Health Demands
Public health officials emphasize that West Nile virus is not the only mosquito-borne threat compounding risks in Europe. Céline Gossner, an expert in food-waterborne diseases and zoonoses at the ECDC, noted that the simultaneous rise in invasive mosquito species requires urgent strategic adaptation.

“The propagation of the transmission of the virus basin, of same that celui d’espèces invasives de moustiques shows that Europe must strengthen its mosquito control capacities,” Céline Gossner stated in an ECDC release, emphasizing the need for an integrated approach. Gossner added that effective containment requires close European cooperation combining mosquito surveillance, community mobilization, and targeted environmental controls.
Parallel to the West Nile virus spread, the ECDC reports that tiger mosquitoes—which transmit dengue and chikungunya—are now established in 16 European countries, representing double the geographic footprint recorded twelve years prior. Because transmission typically peaks between July and September across Europe’s summer and autumn months, health authorities continue to urge coordinated local prevention efforts.
