Direct Microphone Controls Arrive on WhatsApp for iPhone
WhatsApp has begun rolling out a new feature for iPhone users that allows for direct control of microphone modes during active voice and video calls. This update, identified in version 26.27.74, integrates Apple’s native iOS audio processing settings directly into the WhatsApp calling interface, eliminating the need for users to exit the app or navigate to the Control Center to adjust their audio environment.
Navigating the New Audio Interface
During an active call, users can now tap the “More” button on the calling screen to reveal the microphone mode menu. This action triggers the system-level interface from Apple, providing four distinct options for audio processing:

- Standard: Uses the default iOS audio processing.
- Voice Isolation: Prioritizes the user’s voice by actively suppressing background noise, which is designed to improve clarity in noisy environments.
- Wide Spectrum: Leaves ambient sounds unfiltered, which is useful when the caller wants to share the sounds of their surroundings.
- Automatic: Introduced with iOS 18, this setting allows the operating system to dynamically select the most appropriate mode based on the environment.
Persistent Settings for Future Calls
According to WABetaInfo, these preferences are persistent. Once a user selects a specific mode, iOS will retain that setting for future WhatsApp calls, removing the need for manual reconfiguration.
Leveraging Apple’s Native Architecture
While WhatsApp provides the interface link, it is not implementing its own proprietary audio processing engine for this feature. Instead, the application serves as a gateway to the audio management tools already built into the Apple ecosystem. This distinguishes the iPhone experience from the Android version of WhatsApp, which relies on a separate, application-specific algorithm for noise cancellation.
Gradual Rollout Across the App Store
The rollout is currently in a gradual phase for users running the latest version of the application from the App Store. As of the current update cycle, availability will expand to all users over the coming weeks.
