WhatsApp Expands Message Translation Capabilities with 13 New Languages

WhatsApp is enhancing its in-app message translation feature for Android users, adding support for 13 new languages and bringing the total number of supported languages to 19. This update aims to facilitate smoother communication between users who speak different languages, breaking down communication barriers within the popular messaging platform.

New Languages Added

The newly supported languages include Czech, German, French, Indonesian, Italian, Latvian, Dutch, Polish, Swedish, Turkish, Ukrainian, Urdu, and Simplified Chinese. Times Now reports that previously, WhatsApp supported translations from Arabic, Spanish, Hindi, Portuguese, and Russian.

How to Translate Messages

Users can translate messages by long-pressing on the message and selecting the “Translate” option from the context menu. StechGuide details the process, noting that the feature requires the latest version of WhatsApp, available on the Google Play Store or Apple App Store.

Privacy and Security

WhatsApp emphasizes that translations occur directly on users’ devices, utilizing pre-downloaded language packs. This approach protects user privacy by maintaining complete-to-end encryption, as message content is not shared with Meta or any third parties. Times Now highlights this commitment to security.

Automatic Translation Options

Android users have the added ability to enable automatic translation for entire chat threads. This feature automatically translates all incoming messages in a conversation, streamlining communication. About Facebook announced this functionality, which is being rolled out gradually to users.

Availability and Future Developments

The message translation feature is currently available to a limited number of users and will be expanded to the general public in the coming weeks. WhatsApp Facilitate Center advises users to keep their app updated to receive the feature as soon as it becomes available. WhatsApp may also leverage language packs for future features, such as automatic transcription and translation of voice messages.
