WhatsApp to Launch Paid Subscription Tier with Exclusive Features

WhatsApp is reportedly developing a paid subscription service, dubbed “WhatsApp Plus,” offering users enhanced customization options and exclusive features whereas maintaining the free, ad-supported version of the popular messaging app. This move aligns WhatsApp with platforms like Telegram, which likewise offer a freemium model.

What is WhatsApp Plus?

According to a report by WABetaInfo, WhatsApp Plus will introduce a range of new features designed to enhance the user experience for paying subscribers. The standard version of WhatsApp, used by billions globally, will remain free and fully functional. The paid tier is aimed at users who desire greater control over the app’s appearance, and functionality.

Key Features of WhatsApp Plus

  • Customization Options: Subscribers will gain access to approximately 14 new app icon options and a variety of new color themes for the app interface.
  • Exclusive Ringtones: WhatsApp Plus will include a set of exclusive ringtones, allowing users to easily differentiate WhatsApp calls from other communications.
  • Increased Chat Pinning: Users will be able to pin up to 20 chats, a significant increase from the current limit of 3 chats in the standard version.
  • Future Enhancements: WABetaInfo indicates that further exclusive features are planned, including unique stickers and interactive reactions designed to be more immersive.

Privacy Enhancements: Usernames Coming to WhatsApp

In a separate development, WhatsApp is also working on implementing usernames, as reported by WABetaInfo. This feature will allow users to connect with others without sharing their phone numbers, enhancing privacy and security. Usernames will be between 3 and 30 characters long.

Real-Time Support Now Available

WhatsApp has also recently introduced real-time human chat support on its web app, providing users with direct assistance when needed. This new support system aims to improve user experience and resolve issues more efficiently.

Launch Date and Availability

As of March 6, 2026, an exact launch date for WhatsApp Plus has not been announced. However, the development of these new features signals WhatsApp’s commitment to evolving its platform and catering to a wider range of user preferences.
