WhatsApp rolls out four major updates for group chat management

WhatsApp is rolling out four major updates designed to overhaul group chat management, allowing users to pin messages indefinitely, share chat history with new members retroactively, follow dedicated group statuses, and filter unread conversations by mentions.

Permanent Message Pinning Replaces Time Limits

Users can now pin important messages in WhatsApp group chats without any predetermined time limit, as reported by tn.nova.cz. Previously, participants had to select fixed expiration windows of 24 hours, seven days, or 30 days. The update eliminates the need to repeatedly re-pin rules, meeting locations, or organizational guidelines after an expiration date passes, according to reporting by Mobilizujeme.cz.

Retroactive Chat History Sharing for New Members

Administrators can now send recent chat history to new participants long after those individuals join a group. While WhatsApp previously introduced a toggle to share recent messages during the initial addition process, the feature now works retrospectively. Users simply tap a participant’s name within the chat to send past context, ensuring new members understand ongoing discussions without requiring manual explanations, FoneTech.cz noted. This helps in instances where an administrator forgets to share history during the initial addition, and additionally allows members to send recent conversation history to newly added participants.

Dedicated Group Statuses and 24-Hour Sharing

Meta has introduced group-specific statuses that let users share daily updates, photographs, and announcements directly with distinct communities rather than personal contacts. Members can view these posts, react to them, and contribute their own updates. Similar to standard personal statuses, all shared group content automatically disappears after 24 hours.

Advanced Filtering for Unread Mentions and Direct Replies

To combat notification overload in busy group chats, WhatsApp is deploying a new chat filter. The interface highlights unread group conversations where a user was directly tagged, received a direct reply, or where the universal “@všichni” (everyone) mention was triggered. Separately, code discovered in iOS beta testing indicates that the platform is developing a centralized Media Hub to organize received photos, videos, and links across iOS devices, mobilenet.cz reported.

Centralized Media Hub for iOS in Development

Developers are building a Media Hub for iPhones, following a feature introduced last year for Mac and web interfaces. While desktop users already browse media across all conversations at once, the iOS version was discovered in beta version 26.42.10.74 via TestFlight. The hub exclusively displays received content such as photos, videos, and links sent by others, omitting messages sent by the user and excluding disappearing messages for safety and privacy. It features two main tabs: a “New” tab for recently delivered content and an “All Media” tab for complete history. Users can filter items by category into Photographs, Videos, or Links, filter by reactions using a heart symbol at the bottom of the screen, switch between a list view and a grid view, and search by media captions or web addresses. Furthermore, users can forward items, react with emojis, star items for favorites, or jump straight to the original chat without opening the conversation first.

Are messages sent retrospectively to new group members secure?

Yes. Meta confirms that retroactively shared chat histories remain protected by end-to-end encryption, maintaining the same security standards as standard personal and group messages.

Do group statuses remain visible indefinitely?

No. Just like standard personal status updates, any photographs or daily updates shared within a group status automatically expire and disappear after 24 hours.
