Heimir Hallgrímsson Seeks UEFA Intervention After Fractious Nations League Fixtures

No we shouldn’t, Republic of Ireland manager Heimir Hallgrímsson said when asked if his national team should be allowed to be drawn against Israel in future competitive tournaments.

The Republic of Ireland and Israel concluded a tense UEFA Nations League double-header with a 1-1 draw in a match played behind closed doors in Serbia, according to RTÉ. Troy Parrott opened the scoring with a 39th-minute penalty—his 10th goal in his last seven competitive internationals—before Dor Peretz equalized for Israel two minutes after halftime. The fixture followed a Thursday 2-2 draw between Ireland and Austria in Dublin, leaving Ireland level on points with Kosovo and three points behind group leaders Austria ahead of the November international window, rte.ie reported.

Finn Azaz Misses Match Due to Mental Toll

Midfielder Finn Azaz missed both games during the international window due to the mental toll of the team’s demonstrations, BBC Sport reported.

Azaz, who has family links to Israel on his mother’s side, found himself in a difficult position as the squad wore black armbands and bowed their heads during the Israeli national anthem for both matches, bbc.com noted. Although Azaz played 90 minutes and produced a strong display in the 2-2 draw against Austria, picking up a minor knock, Hallgrímsson concluded he was not mentally ready to feature against Israel.

Finn played 90 minutes against Austria and got a little knock, but also, this has been tough on him mentally and I just didn’t feel he was ready for playing, Hallgrímsson explained to bbc.com, adding that the player deserved credit for remaining with the squad.

When asked if the Southampton midfielder would continue his international career, the Ireland manager told bbc.com he hoped so, stating that nothing pointed to Azaz quitting and that his presence showed a desire to reach the Euro 2028 finals.

Players Clash in Tunnel Amid Fatigue

The fixture in Serbia also featured a halftime flashpoint, with players and staff clashing in the tunnel before a tepid second half, rte.ie reported.

Hallgrímsson told rte.ie that both teams suffered from physical and mental fatigue after a demanding camp that required four international flights across four countries. Despite a disappointing second-half performance, the manager credited his players for keeping their composure during the tunnel incident. He noted that the squad systems had been severely tested by the logistical and emotional strain of the fixtures.

Hallgrímsson Asks UEFA to Separate Ireland and Israel

Reflecting on the turbulent two-week camp, Hallgrímsson called on European football’s governing body to keep the Republic of Ireland and Israel apart in future draws, rte.ie reported.

Pointing to strong public support for Palestine in Ireland, the manager stated that he would not wish any national team to endure the challenges his squad faced, suggesting that UEFA should step in to separate the sides in upcoming Nations League cycles and Euro 2028 qualifiers.
