Wil Wheaton Narrates Stephen King’s “The Body” and Reflects on “Stand By Me”

Forty years after captivating audiences in the film adaptation, actor Wil Wheaton has revisited Stephen King’s novella “The Body” as its narrator for a new audiobook release. The project coincides with anniversary screenings of “Stand By Me,” prompting Wheaton to reflect on his experiences with the film, its director Rob Reiner, and the enduring themes of loss and friendship at the heart of both stories.

A Return to a Beloved Story

Wheaton, known for his roles in “Star Trek: The Next Generation” and “The Sizeable Bang Theory,” shared that narrating the audiobook allowed him to reconnect with the story on a deeper level. He deliberately sought to emulate River Phoenix’s performance in key scenes, particularly the emotionally resonant conversation between Gordie and Chris. “I watched that scene a couple of times as I really wanted—I don’t know why it was so significant to me to—well, I know: because I loved him, and I miss him,” Wheaton explained.

Rob Reiner’s Impact

Wheaton emphasized the pivotal role Rob Reiner played in fostering a creative and supportive environment on the set of “Stand By Me.” Reiner encouraged the young actors to embrace their natural instincts and have fun, a departure from the often-restrictive expectations placed upon child performers. “Rob really encouraged us to be kids,” Wheaton recalled. He also highlighted Reiner’s trust in the actors, citing a story about Jerry O’Connell’s improvised line being enthusiastically embraced by the director.

The recent tribute to Reiner at the Academy Awards, following his and his wife Michele’s tragic death in 2025, held particular significance for Wheaton. “We all got our start with Rob Reiner. He trusted every single one of us,” Wheaton said, reflecting on the director’s lasting legacy.

Narrating with New Perspective

Wheaton noted that narrating the audiobook provided a unique opportunity to revisit the story with the benefit of time and experience. He found resonance in the novella’s exploration of nostalgia and coming to terms with loss, themes that have taken on new meaning in his own life. “I was so excited to narrate it. It’s a great story! It’s a funny story. It’s such a lovely break—it’s an emotional and tonal shift from what’s happening in the movie,” he stated.

Remembering River Phoenix

The audiobook project also brought back poignant memories of his late co-star, River Phoenix. Wheaton spoke of his admiration for Phoenix, recalling him as a mature and wise presence on set despite being only a year older. “I feel the loss,” Wheaton shared, acknowledging the profound impact of Phoenix’s untimely death. “It is a privilege that I was allowed to tell this story.”
