POCATELLO – as winds from a severe thunderstorm ravaged sections of eastern Idaho on Wednesday, many locals captured dramatic photos of teh damages.
Wind gusts reportedly reached over 80 mph on Wednesday, with high winds expected to continue through Friday, according to the National Weather Service. The weather caused fallen trees, broken power lines, tipped semis and other vehicles, and even collapsed buildings.

The campaign, titled “Winter Wise,” focuses on educating drivers about the dangers of winter driving and providing practical tips to mitigate risks. ITD officials emphasize that even seemingly minor snow or ice can substantially impact road conditions and increase the likelihood of accidents.
“Idaho winters can be unpredictable,” said Brian Ness, ITD’s Highway Safety Manager. “We want to empower drivers to make smart decisions before and during thier trips. That means checking the forecast,adjusting travel plans if necessary,and being prepared for anything.”
Key components of the “winter wise” campaign include:
- Pre-Trip Preparation: Drivers are encouraged to ensure their vehicles are winterized with appropriate tires (winter or all-season with sufficient tread), functioning headlights and taillights, and a full tank of gas. A winter emergency kit containing items like blankets, warm clothing, a flashlight, jumper cables, and snacks is also recommended.
- Safe Driving Practices: The campaign stresses the importance of slowing down, increasing following distances, and avoiding sudden braking or steering maneuvers. Drivers should be notably cautious on bridges and overpasses, which tend to freeze more quickly than roadways.
- Real-Time Road details: ITD provides up-to-date road conditions and traffic information through several channels,including the 511 website, the 511 mobile app, and social media platforms. Drivers are urged to use these resources to stay informed about potential hazards.
