Wisconsin EV Charging Infrastructure Expands with $14 Million Investment
Madison, WI – Wisconsin is accelerating the expansion of its electric vehicle (EV) charging infrastructure with a $14 million investment in 26 new charging stations across the state. The funding, secured through the National Electric Vehicle Infrastructure (NEVI) program, aims to alleviate “range anxiety” and encourage wider adoption of electric vehicles.
Growing EV Adoption in Wisconsin
As of November 2025, Wisconsin had over 37,000 registered electric vehicles, a significant increase of approximately 10,000 from the previous year . In September 2024, the Wisconsin Department of Motor Vehicles reported roughly 27,000 registered EVs . Industry experts anticipate continued growth as charging infrastructure becomes more readily available.
NEVI Funding and Infrastructure Development
The $14 million investment is part of a larger effort to build 78 charging sites statewide utilizing NEVI funds . These fast-charging stations will be strategically located along interstate corridors, as well as at common destinations like gas stations and hotels.
Overcoming Funding Obstacles
Access to these funds was not guaranteed. Earlier this year, Wisconsin joined a multi-state lawsuit against the Trump Administration to prevent the blocking of over $60 million in NEVI Formula Program funding . A federal judge ultimately ruled in favor of the states, allowing the funds to be released and projects to move forward .
Private Sector Investment
Whereas the new stations are funded by NEVI grants, private companies are also investing in EV charging infrastructure. Midwestern Wheels, a car rental company, recently added “DC Fast” (Level 3) chargers to its Madison and Appleton airport locations . These chargers can provide an 80% charge in under 30 minutes and are available for free to all EV owners . Midwestern Wheels has also pre-built the electrical infrastructure to support future expansion of charging stations .
Looking Ahead
The continued investment in EV charging infrastructure signals Wisconsin’s commitment to a clean energy future. As the number of electric vehicles on the road increases, the state aims to provide accessible and reliable charging options for residents and visitors alike .
