Wolf Alice Crowned Band of the Year, Champions Grassroots Music Scene

Wolf Alice has been awarded Band of the Year for the second consecutive year, solidifying their position as a leading force in the British music industry. The band celebrated their win by performing their song “Sofa” from their latest album, The Clearing, against elaborate backdrops. Frontwoman Ellie Rowsell used her acceptance speech to emphasize the critical importance of supporting small clubs and local music scenes.

The Fight to Preserve Live Music

Rowsell’s advocacy reflects a broader concern within the industry about the challenges facing grassroots music venues. Wolf Alice has consistently championed this cause, with guitarist Joff Oddie recently addressing a parliamentary committee to discuss the issue. While Oddie expressed cautious optimism about the future of cultural support, the band’s commitment to nurturing emerging talent remains steadfast.

A Decade of Evolution

Formed in 2010 by Ellie Rowsell and Joff Oddie as an acoustic duo, Wolf Alice quickly expanded to include bassist Theo Ellis and drummer Joel Amey. The band has maintained a consistent lineup throughout its history. They have released four studio albums, showcasing a dynamic range that blends pop, rock, and punk influences. Rowsell’s vocal versatility, capable of both delicate softness and powerful screams, is a defining characteristic of their sound.

From Indie Roots to Mainstream Recognition

In recent years, Wolf Alice’s popularity has surged, boosted by a joint tour with Harry Styles and a move to a major record label, Columbia Records. Their previous album, Blue Weekend, released in 2021 through Dirty Hit, received critical acclaim and was shortlisted for the Mercury Prize. Blue Weekend was preceded by the singles “The Last Man on Earth”, “Smile”, “No Hard Feelings” and “How Can I Make It OK?”.

The Clearing and Continued Rock Energy

With The Clearing, Wolf Alice explored a softer sound, drawing inspiration from 1970s pop rock. However, the band has continued to deliver high-energy performances live, as demonstrated during their autumn concert in Prague. They are set to return to the Rock for People festival in the Czech Republic on June 12, 2026, headlining alongside Bring Me the Horizon.
