East Carolina Women’s Basketball Secures Senior Day Victory Over Charlotte

GREENVILLE, N.C. – The East Carolina women’s basketball team celebrated Senior Day with a 64-57 win over the Charlotte 49ers on Saturday afternoon at Minges Coliseum. The victory was fueled by a strong performance from its senior class, who combined for 55 of the team’s 64 points.

Senior Class Shines

Honored before the game were seniors Savannah Brooks, Jayla Hearp, Anzhané Hutton, Kennedy Fauntleroy, Keanna Rembert, and Bobbi Smith. Their contributions were pivotal in securing the win.

Game Recap

East Carolina (21-9, 13-4 American Athletic Conference) led for nearly 35 minutes of the game, though the contest remained closely contested. A 13-2 run in the third quarter gave the Pirates a 10-point lead, which proved sufficient to hold off Charlotte in a low-scoring affair.

The first half was a struggle for ECU, shooting just 2-17 from the field in the opening quarter. Still, they managed to stay within reach by converting 9 of 12 free throws. Keanna Rembert provided a spark with five points, including a crucial three-pointer.

In the second quarter, ECU improved slightly to 6-17 from the field, while Charlotte’s Princess Anderson began to assert herself, scoring eight points on her way to a game-high 23 points.

Third Quarter Surge

The Pirates found their rhythm in the third quarter, sparked by three-pointers from Savannah Brooks and efficient free-throw shooting (7 of 8). This run allowed ECU to pull away and establish a comfortable lead.

Closing Strong

Charlotte attempted a late comeback, narrowing the deficit to four points in the final minutes, but ECU’s strong free-throw shooting (7-10 in the fourth quarter) sealed the victory. Taylor Barner’s free throws with 15 seconds remaining put the game out of reach.

Team Effort and Records

The Pirates’ victory was a testament to their team defense and opportunistic scoring, resulting in 26 points off 28 turnovers forced and 15 steals. Anzhané Hutton led the Pirates with 14 points and a career-high-tying five steals. Savannah Brooks added 12 points. Kennedy Fauntleroy contributed 10 points, six assists, and three steals, while Zaniah Zellous grabbed a team-high six rebounds and Bobbi Smith recorded three steals.

This win marked several milestones for the Pirates:

• The senior class of Jayla Hearp and Bobbi Smith are now tied for the ECU record for wins by a four-year class, with 80 wins.
• 13 conference wins represent a new program record.
• 21 wins is the second-most in a regular season in program history and the third-highest total overall.
• The win secures ECU the two seed in the American Athletic Conference Tournament.
• Head coach Kim McNeill has tied Catherine Bolton for the third-most career wins in program history with 108.
