Celebrating Invisible Labor: Acknowledging Women’s Unrecognized Contributions on International Women’s Day and Beyond

As the Milan Cortina 2026 Winter Olympics conclude and the Paralympic Games begin, a parallel celebration unfolds – a spotlight on the “Women’s Invisible Work Olympics.” This initiative, launched by First Cisl Milano Metropoli, aims to recognize the often-unseen and unrewarded labor that sustains families, communities, and society, work that disproportionately falls on women.

The Invisible Olympics: Disciplines of Daily Life

Whereas Olympic athletes compete for medals under the global spotlight, women consistently demonstrate exceptional skill and dedication in a different arena: the daily “Olympics” of care, organization, and emotional support. These efforts, though vital, often head unrecognized and uncompensated.

Disciplines of Dedication

• Extreme Multitasking: Juggling work, childcare, and household management simultaneously, without pause.
• Strategic Family Calendar Management: Masterfully coordinating appointments, deadlines, school events, and birthdays with precision.
• 24/7 Emotional Support: Providing constant presence, listening, encouragement, and care for the well-being of others, often without acknowledgment.
• Strategic Spending: Transforming limited budgets into effective solutions through careful planning, logistics, and creativity.
• Daily Resilience: Performing these tasks consistently, often without breaks, applause, or recognition.

A Call to Action: Sharing Stories of Invisible Work

First Cisl Milano Metropoli invites individuals to participate by sharing their “medals” – images, photos, drawings, or short texts – that represent the invisible work of women in their lives. The goal is to give voice to these contributions and highlight their social value. Submissions can be sent to milano@firstcisl.it, along with a consent form for data processing. Collected materials will be showcased in a future initiative by First Cisl Milano Metropoli.

International Women’s Day and Beyond

This initiative coincides with International Women’s Day (March 8th), a global day to commemorate the struggles and achievements of women. By recognizing invisible labor, we acknowledge the essential role women play in sustaining society and advocate for greater equity and recognition of their contributions.
