Focus on Health Emergency in Ukraine

Delegates at the Assembly approved a critical decision regarding the health emergency in Ukraine, following a report by the WHO Director-General on the humanitarian and emergency health response in the country. The decision requests the continued implementation of the existing resolution WHA75.11 on the health emergency in Ukraine, with a progress report to be submitted to the World Health Assembly in 2027. This move underscores the international community’s commitment to supporting Ukraine’s emergency health response amid ongoing conflicts.

Integrated Approach to Noncommunicable Diseases and Mental Health

The Assembly highlighted the urgent need for an integrated response to noncommunicable diseases (NCDs) and mental health conditions, which remain the leading causes of illness and premature death globally. At a WHO Strategic Roundtable, ministers, policy-makers, partners, and individuals with lived experience discussed strategies to transition from disease-specific approaches to people-centered health systems. Key themes included addressing shared risk factors, strengthening social connections, and leveraging financing and fiscal policies to tackle health determinants.

This discussion builds on the 2025 Political Declarations on NCDs and mental health, which reaffirmed global commitments to coordinated, multisectoral action across prevention, treatment, and care. Experts emphasized the importance of addressing social, commercial, and environmental factors driving NCDs and mental health challenges, particularly in the context of aging populations and widening health inequities.

Looking Ahead

The 2026 World Health Assembly has set a clear agenda for advancing global health equity and resilience. By honoring dedicated professionals, addressing urgent crises like Ukraine’s health emergency, and promoting integrated health systems, the Assembly reinforces the principle that “health for all” is achievable through collective action and innovation. As the global health landscape evolves, the lessons and decisions from this assembly will play a pivotal role in shaping future policies and interventions.
