Inspired to serve following the events of 9/11, Nicholas Firth enlisted in the U.S. Army as an Infantryman with 2-22 Infantry, 10th Mountain Division. His life changed on June 9, 2006, during his first combat deployment in Balad, Iraq. While supporting Battery B, 5th Battalion, 113th Field Artillery Regiment, his truck struck an improvised explosive device (IED).
