Xbox Players Pay 24 to 40 Cents Per Hour for Cloud Gaming Without Game Pass

Xbox cloud streaming is losing its strict tether to Microsoft subscription tiers, opening up a la carte playtime options that cost between 24 and 40 cents an hour for players who already own their software, PCMag reported. Selected Xbox Insiders gained access to purchasable cloud playtime packs, allowing non-subscribers to stream eligible games on supported devices without paying the regular monthly Game Pass fee.

The a la carte pricing structure breaks down into three distinct blocks, according to Ars Technica: 10 hours for $3.99, 25 hours for $7.99, and 50 hours for $11.99. That pricing translates to roughly 40 cents per hour for the smallest package, 32 cents for the medium tier, and 24 cents for the largest bundle. Microsoft confirmed that any purchased hours will not expire and will automatically roll over month by month, unlike subscription allotments.

Requirements and Library Restrictions for Cloud Playtime

Purchasing cloud playtime does not grant access to a rotating library of games or bypass ownership requirements. Ars Technica reported that the system requires users to already own the streamable games in their personal library or access eligible free-to-play titles. IGN noted that this functionality was previously locked exclusively behind the Game Pass Ultimate tier, which costs $23 a month according to Kotaku.

Kotaku also reported that Nvidia’s competing GeForce Now cloud service charges $10 a month for up to 100 hours of premium streaming playtime for games users already own on external storefronts like Steam. By contrast, Xbox’s pay-as-you-go model targets players who want occasional cloud access without committing to a recurring monthly subscription.

Microsoft noted that availability, purchasing options, eligible games, and cloud gaming features vary by market, device, account eligibility, and preview ring. Ars Technica compared the new pricing model to historical arcade systems where players paid per play, though noting a key difference: traditional arcade cabinets did not require customers to purchase the game hardware or software upfront.

Microsoft Tests Purchasable Playtime Before November Rollout

The a la carte launch coincides with broader changes to Microsoft’s cloud streaming ecosystem. In July, Xbox began testing free, ad-supported cloud gaming for Insiders without a Game Pass, though those sessions were strictly capped at one hour each. The purchasable playtime option is testing through the Xbox Insider program before rolling out more broadly in November.

Alongside the broader public release in November, Game Pass subscribers will face new monthly streaming limits that Microsoft announced in September. PCMag reported that Game Pass Ultimate subscribers will receive 15 hours of complimentary cloud streaming per month starting in November, while Game Pass Premium and Game Pass Essential subscribers will receive ten and five hours respectively.
