YouTube Demonetizes Soul Food Channel Over AI-Generated Content and Imposture Concerns
YouTube demonetized a cooking channel named “Potlikker” after an internal review revealed its content relied heavily on artificial intelligence to create synthetic media. The channel, formerly known as “The Hungry Historian,” utilized synthetic voiceovers, generated thumbnails, and fabricated archival clips without employing any real people.
The channel featured video titles like “Big Mama vs Betty Crocker: 25 Dishes No Cookbook Ever Printed” and captions utilizing African American Vernacular English. Detection tools including ZeroGPT and DeepAI indicated the media was largely synthetic, while ElevenLabs’s AI Speech Classifier identified the voiceovers as utilizing its “Attank” voice model, described as a middle-aged male with an African accent. Despite presenting itself as an authentic repository of African American food history spanning Sunday dinners and Juneteenth tables, the channel’s associated social media profiles featured only a photograph of a white man.
Public Scrutiny From Content Creators Exposed the Operation
Ian Yusuf, host of the “Soul Food Project” podcast, first discovered the channel after an elder family friend texted him a recommendation. Yusuf examined the page and noted that captions and thumbnails appeared fabricated. Yusuf attempted to contact the operators by email to ask about the family recipes featured on the site, but received no response. All social media pages linked to Potlikker have since been deleted.
Filmmaker and YouTuber Cam James also investigated the channel’s provenance, noting that its digital cookbook listed a private company named Hiraya Media Ltd located in Agios Athanasios, Cyprus. James criticized the channel for utilizing a culturally Black veneer to sell a $17 cookbook titled “Big Mama’s Soul Food Kitchen.” Hiraya Media Ltd did not immediately respond to requests for comment regarding the operation.
Baratunde Thurston, writer and host of “Life With Machines,” noted that digital tools have streamlined cultural extraction. Thurston stated that technology allows individuals to mine cultural aesthetics and bypass human interaction entirely. Yusuf added that he subsequently identified a similar YouTube channel focused on Mexican cooking that sold a $60 cookbook utilizing AI-generated images and recipes.
YouTube Demonetizes Channel for Low Quality Content
YouTube policy prohibits the impersonation of specific individuals’ images or voices, but does not explicitly ban content that mimics a specific racial or cultural group. A YouTube representative confirmed that the channel was removed from the YouTube Partner Program following an internal review, rendering it ineligible to earn money from advertisements. Channels suspended from the partner program are eligible to reapply after 90 days.
While YouTube permits AI-generated and AI-assisted content, platform rules mandate the demonetization of low-quality content that is generic, repetitive, or relies heavily on AI-generated imagery. In January, YouTube CEO Neal Mohan outlined platform goals to reduce the spread of low-quality AI material by utilizing established systems designed to combat spam, clickbait, and repetitive uploads.
