YouTube TV Launches Fully Customizable Multiview

YouTube TV has officially launched its fully customizable multiview feature, allowing subscribers to watch up to four live channels simultaneously, selected from the entirety of the service’s channel lineup. This update, which began rolling out to users last week, marks a significant expansion of the multiview functionality initially introduced in March 2023.

From Limited Selection to Full Control

Previously, YouTube TV’s multiview was restricted to pre-selected channels focused on sports and news, or specific event lineups like March Madness and NFL Sunday Ticket. The new custom multiview builder provides users with complete control over their viewing experience, enabling them to combine channels from across their subscription packages, including add-ons like NFL Sunday Ticket.

How the Custom Multiview Works

Users can access the multiview builder through a dedicated tab within the YouTube TV interface. Content is organized into categories such as “Recommended,” “Sports,” “News,” and “Movies,” simplifying the selection process. The feature allows for mixing and matching channels across different packages, offering a tailored viewing experience.

Limitations and Device Compatibility

Whereas the custom multiview offers extensive flexibility, some limitations apply. Only live content is supported. recordings and on-demand video are not currently compatible. certain “family-friendly” content is excluded from customization.

Google states that custom multiview is supported on the vast majority of devices, with compatibility issues affecting less than 5% of users. Specific devices with limited support have not been publicly detailed.

How to Use Multiview

To create a multiview stream:

• While watching eligible content, press down on your remote (on a smart TV or streaming device) or tap the video (on an iOS device).
• Select “multiview.”
• Choose content to add from the available categories or select specific channels.

Users can easily switch between audio sources and expand individual channels to full screen while in multiview.
