Zalgiris defeats Taurage 96-76 in LKL action as Jonas Valanciunas posts season-high numbers
Kaunas Zalgiris secured a 96-76 victory against Taurage in the Lithuanian Basketball League (LKL), bouncing back from a difficult EuroLeague week with a dominant performance marked by Jonas Valanciunas’s season-high statistics. The win marked the 41st LKL victory for Zalgiris and their 45th overall in Lithuania, including KMT competitions.
First-half struggles give way to third-quarter control
Zalgiris started the match slowly, allowing Taurage to score heavily in transition during the opening two quarters. We started the first half a bit lackluster. We let our opponents score too many points, conceding ten from the fast break alone,
Tomas Masiulis explained. The visitors kept the score close through the first half, trailing by just a single point at 43-42 by halftime.
The momentum shifted decisively in the third quarter when Zalgiris put together a 10-0 scoring run to pull ahead 69-52. Masiulis pointed to defensive adjustments as the catalyst for the turnaround. We stepped up our defense in the second half and, I think, deservedly won.
he stated.
Valanciunas dominates inside for 29 efficiency rating
Jonas Valanciunas led the winners with 21 points and 29 efficiency rating points in just 17 minutes of action. He shot 8-for-11 on two-pointers, 5/7 on free throws, grabbed 7 rebounds, blocked 2 shots, and committed 4 turnovers.

Masiulis noted that getting the ball to the center proved straightforward when opponents played single coverage. It was easier to pass the ball to him today. If the opponents are defending one on one, it’s really hard to stop him,
Masiulis said.
Tubelis injury brings a bloody scare to Zalgirio Arena
The game featured a frightening incident late in the third quarter when Zalgiris forward Azuolas Tubelis collided with Taurage player Vitalijus Kozys during a fast break. Tubelis fell to the parquet holding his face as blood pooled on the floor.
Teammates Edgaras Ulanovas and Marekas Blazevicius helped Tubelis leave the court directly for the locker room. However, the forward returned to the bench before the start of the fourth quarter. Masiulis provided an update after the final whistle, stating that the player sustained a strong bruise and a bloody nose, with medical staff monitoring his condition.
Roster updates on Williams-Goss and upcoming status checks
Zalgiris played without Nigel Williams-Goss, Carsen Edwards, and Dustin Sleva. When asked about Williams-Goss, who missed the game due to health issues, Masiulis noted that additional medical evaluations would determine his status. It will be clearer tomorrow, additional tests will be carried out,
the coach said.
