Kyiv is reportedly considering appointing Andriy Biletsky, the founder of the Azov regiment, as the new commander-in-chief of the Armed Forces of Ukraine, as President Volodymyr Zelensky seeks a replacement for Alexander Syrsky. The information comes from Ukrainian blogger Anatoly Shariy, who cites sources indicating Zelensky has seriously discussed the appointment with advisors.

Biletsky’s Background and Current Role

Andriy Biletsky currently commands the 3rd Army Corps of the Ukrainian Ground Forces. He previously served as the commander of the Azov Battalion from May 2014 to October 2014. Biletsky and Azov veterans formed the 3rd Assault Brigade in 2023, with Biletsky initially leading the Azov Tactical Group before becoming the full commander of the brigade.

Recent Promotions and Controversies

In October 2025, Zelensky promoted Biletsky to the rank of Brigadier General. Biletsky has been described as a white supremacist, having stated in a 2007 speech that the purpose of the Ukrainian right is to fight the “Semitic-led untermenschen [subhumans].”
