Zero Latency VR Marks Halloween With Immersive Horror Network Expansion

Zero Latency VR marked the double anniversary of its location-based horror titles on Oct. 1, 2026, combining free-roam zombie survival games with psychological research on recreational fear. The company announced that its zombie survival shooter Outbreak reached its three-year milestone, while its immersive haunted house experience Haunted celebrated one year of operation across its global network.

The immersive entertainment network operates across 150+ venues in 34 countries, according to company statements. To examine the operational success of its horror catalog, the company enlisted Dr. Coltan Scrivner, a research scientist at Arizona State University who studies recreational fear and morbid curiosity.

Psychology of Recreational Fear in Immersive Gaming

Scrivner, author of Morbidly Curious: A Scientist Explains Why We Can’t Look Away, examined why players willingly pay for simulated terror. His research focuses on how humans process mixed emotions of fear and enjoyment through horror media and survival games.

“Humans are built to play with the things that frighten us,” Scrivner said in a statement provided by the company. “It’s a great way for us to learn how to better regulate our fear and anxiety.”

The researcher noted that free-roam virtual reality differs from traditional horror formats by blurring the line between fiction and reality. According to Scrivner, immersive hardware allows players to safely test stress responses while maintaining a playful psychological frame.

Tim Ruse, CEO of Zero Latency VR, stated that the company spent over eleven years refining mechanics like the jump scare for its hardware setups. Ruse noted that venues experienced their busiest and loudest seasons during October, driven by players seeking elevated heart rates in controlled environments.
