YouTube as a Creative Equalizer
Reflecting on her career pivot after her Showtime variety series “Ziwe” was canceled following network leadership changes in 2023, Ziwe pointed to digital self-publishing as a vital outlet for modern artists. According to Variety, she described YouTube as a “great equalizer” that bypasses the traditional, often arduous hurdles of developing and selling a television series. “You create it, and then it’s online,” Ziwe said, as reported by Variety. “That is the best experience as someone who is artistic, as someone who wants to create art. I do believe that digital creators are the new Hollywood.” She noted that her path follows figures like Issa Rae, Abbi Jacobson, and Ilana Glazer, who built audiences independently before crossing over into traditional media.
Balancing Comedy and Confrontation in Interviews
Known for an interview style that blends sharp social commentary with deadpan comedy, Ziwe explained her tactical approach to managing guest interactions. According to Variety, she relies heavily on pacing and active listening rather than rushing to fill dead air. “I don’t feel the need to fill dead air, and so that is comedic because someone sitting in silence as you sort of ramble is inherently hilarious,” she stated. Describing the framework of her show, she added, “Obviously, the questions and the journalism are part of the entree, but the amuse-bouche is that we are laughing and enjoying ourselves.” During the conversation, she also addressed a rare instance where an interview completely derailed, noting that one guest ended the conversation after just three questions due to what she characterized as a clash of energy.
Future Projects and Dream Guests
Looking ahead, Ziwe confirmed that interviewing remains her primary professional focus, though she continues to expand into acting and writing following her feature film debut in “One Night Only.” According to Variety, she aims to take on at least one guest-star acting role per year. Despite occasional online pushback when her show touches on political topics, Ziwe emphasized that maintaining creative control on her own channel remains non-negotiable.
