Kecmanovic Upsets Zverev in Acapulco, Reaching Quarterfinals
Miomir Kecmanovic achieved a significant upset on Wednesday at the Abierto Mexicano Telcel presentado por HSBC in Acapulco, defeating World No. 4 Alexander Zverev 6-3, 6-7(3), 7-6(4). This marks Kecmanovic’s first career victory against a Top 5 opponent.
Kecmanovic’s Breakthrough Win
The 26-year-old Kecmanovic, currently ranked No. 84, entered the match with an 0-11 record against players in the Top 5 of the PIF ATP Rankings. Despite this history, he played confidently, particularly with his backhand, and capitalized on Zverev’s deep return positioning. “It feels amazing, especially due to the fact that it’s been a rough couple of years,” Kecmanovic said. “So I’m happy that some things are going my way finally.”
Zverev’s Struggles and Unforced Errors
Zverev, the 2021 Acapulco champion, struggled with 17 backhand unforced errors compared to Kecmanovic’s six. Kecmanovic noted he felt no pressure facing the higher-ranked Zverev, stating, “Obviously he’s the substantial favourite, so I didn’t have any pressure there, but you still have to play well when it matters, close out the match and thankfully it went my way.”
Tournament Upsets Continue
Zverev’s defeat is the third upset of a top seed at the ATP 500 tournament in Acapulco. Australian Alex de Minaur (No. 2) was eliminated in the first round on Monday, and Norwegian Casper Ruud (No. 3) lost on Tuesday.
Looking Ahead for Kecmanovic
Kecmanovic will now face French lefty Terence Atmane in the quarterfinals. Atmane advanced after defeating wild card Rafael Jodar 6-2, 4-6, 6-1. This will be the first Lexus ATP Head2Head meeting between Kecmanovic, and Atmane.
